Rice. Lissie, Texas. Jay Janner/Austin American-Statesman
This is about as abstract as it gets for my photography. Normally my photography has a very specific purpose. That is to tell a story. However, in this case I was drawn to the shapes, colors and textures of the inside of a storage container holding 400,000 pounds of rough rice. I guess I’m a frustrated artist, and this is my attempt at a modern art canvas.

Workers began washing off the grass at Zilker Park yesterday after Sunday’s mud fest at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Some festival goers had a great time playing in the mud and I had a fun time taking their picture. But it took forever to wash off my boots (below). My colleague Jay West took this photo of me near the end of the day Sunday.

The 8th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival was an epic event. Friday had the best weather of any day in the festival’s history. Saturday gave us a daylong downpour – the first serious rain ever at ACL. Sunday turned into a major mudfest. Please check out some of my favorite photos that I posted on the Austin American-Statesman’s photoblog Collective Vision:

Them Crooked Vultures, a new supergroup featuring drummer Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), bassist John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and guitarist/singer Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), unofficially kicked off the ACL Fest with a show at Stubb's on Thursday Oct. 1, 2009. Stage lights are being adjusted, sound systems are being tweaked and beer is being delivered Thursday as final preparations are underway for the opening of the ACL Fest on Friday morning. I’ll be snapping photos all weekend. This will be my seventh year covering the ACL Fest. It’s one of my busiest times of the year, but also one of the most fun times.

There was a brief shower while people waited in line for their ACL Fest wristbands today. But if the weekend weather forecast holds true this year’s ACL Fest should be one of the best with highs in the mid- 80s and a slight chance of rain. The brand new grass at Zilker Park is icing on the cake.
