The winner of the annual Red River Rivalry between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma gets the coveted Golden Hat Trophy.  Each year after the game several players try it on.  I liked Chris Hall’s expression as he put the metal cowboy hat on his head.

Continuing with tradition, midshipmen in UT’s Naval ROTC ran with a game ball from Austin to Dallas for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma.  Shortly after arriving at the Cotton Bowl the Longhorn midshipmen met their counterparts from Oklahoma at a city park for their annual flag football game.  The Longhorns got their seventh straight win in the Texas-Oklahoma game almost no one knows about.

Breast cancer awareness

Jennifer Treadaway prays during a breast cancer awareness program at St. David's Women's Center of Texas on Wednesday Oct. 14, 2009. Treadaway released a pink balloon in honor of her mother, Ellen Treadaway, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago. People released pink balloons to celebrate the lives of breast cancer survivors and white balloons to honor those who died of breast cancer. Proceeds from the $1 balloons went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Photo by Jay Janner/Austin American-Statesman

This is about as abstract as it gets for my photography. Normally my photography has a very specific purpose. That is to tell a story. However, in this case I was drawn to the shapes, colors and textures of the inside of a storage container holding 400,000 pounds of rough rice. I guess I’m a frustrated artist, and this is my attempt at a modern art canvas.

Workers began washing off the grass at Zilker Park yesterday after Sunday’s mud fest at the Austin City Limits Music Festival.  Some festival goers had a great time playing in the mud and I had a fun time taking their picture.  But it took forever to wash off my boots (below).  My colleague Jay West took this photo of me near the end of the day Sunday.
