What better way to spend a sizzling hot summer day than to eat salsa? Thousands came out to Waterloo Park for the 19th annual Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival where they sampled about 350 salsas that were entered in the hot sauce contest. Two of the salsas were so hot that they came with a warning sign. That didn’t stop many from trying them – and paying the consequences.

From Kevin Robbins’ story examining the cut in golf:   Baseball has its seventh-inning stretch. Football has a halftime. Professional golf has a cut: a pruning of the field that eliminates more than half of the players who began the tournament planning, hoping, dreaming or praying to play at a level that allows them to play the weekend.

I took a drive to Aubrey, Texas, last week to photograph legendary high school football coach G.A. Moore with his new team at Aubrey High School. Moore, 70, is the winningest high school football coach in Texas history. He decided to come out of a five-year retirement to coach Aubrey, a team that has never been to state. Moore begins his 43rd season coaching small town Texas football on Friday.

My last two assignments have been on the red carpet.  On Thursday I photographed Latin music stars arriving for Premios Texas, and today I photographed the premier of Robert Rodriguez’ movie “Shorts.”  I’m starting to feel like a Hollywood paparazzo.   For a moment Rodriguez joined us photographers in taking his own snapshots of his two sons who are stars in the movie.

I spent a couple of hours last night on the red carpet at Premios Texas Latin music awards photographing a some of the hottest Latin pop stars.  There were bursts of screaming as each limo pulled up to the red carpet, but the loudest was saved for the last –  two-time Grammy award winning Latin pop star Olga Tañon.
