Well it’s not exactly hard-hitting journalism, but we needed an extra feature photo Sunday afternoon and this is what I came up with on short notice.  I kind of like it though.

This photo was recently awarded 3rd Place in the General News category of the NPPA Best of Photojournalism 2009 contest.  This particular moment was the saddest thing I photographed all year.  Perhaps it hit me so hard because I have a son about that same age.

I spent a couple of evenings this week at the Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo photographing the little buckaroos in the Mutton Bustin’ event.  Cute kids, animals, lots of action….What more do I need?  You can see a photo gallery and an audio slideshow over at the Statesman’s photoblog, Collective Vision.

One of my favorite bands at SXSW ‘09 was Echo & the Bunnymen.  They played at least four shows that I know of, and I caught two of them.  On Wednesday they played Emo’s with almost no stage lights.  So I made a point to photograph them again on Sunday performing for DIRECTV under made-for-TV lighting.

I hung out with the teenagers for awhile at Emo’s Annex on Sunday.  They had a lot of enthusiasm for their favorite bands, and that helped make some good photos.

Right after this song Joe Ty laid his guitar on the sidewalk, took off his belt and proceeded to whip his guitar.

Star Death and White Dwarfs opened with a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf,” and they went a little crazy with the smoke machine.
