Longhorns open season with a win

The University of Texas season-opening 52-10 win over Florida Atlantic was preceded by a jersey retirement ceremony for Vince Young.  Texas quarterback Colt McCoy led his team with four touchdowns.

Live Music Capital

The Reivers

One of my favorite things about being a photojournalist in Austin is getting to see some amazing live music.  Tonight I saw one of my favorite bands of all time – The Reivers.  In my opinion The Reivers were the quintessential Austin band of the 80s.  They reunited last February after breaking up 16 years ago.  I wrote this sidebar to the Statesman’s story in February when they reunited.  Tonight’s concert was a benefit for the Austin Child Guidance Center.  Also on the bill were two other prominent Austin acts – Ian McLagan (formerly of the Faces and Small Faces) and headlining was Alejandro Escovedo, straight off his appearance at the Democratic National Convention.  It was a perfect night in the Live Music Capital of the World.

I shot these photos of Austin landmarks the last couple of evenings while on assignment at the University of Texas.  These photos had nothing to do with my assignments, but I couldn’t resist the nice light.

Football is back!

This is an outtake from an assignment I shot today about the football team at Eastside Memorial High School in Austin.   Eastside High was formerly known as Johnston High School before the school was shut down in June by the state for poor academic performance and then re-opened with new teachers and a new name.  The football team hasn’t won a game against a varsity team since 2004.

Last October I produced an audio slideshow about Johnston’s first win since 2004 (albeit against a junior varsity team).

A few weeks ago I learned that Austin has one of the 12 homeless soccer teams in the U.S. that were going to compete in the Homeless USA Cup in Washington, DC.  I produced this video about the Austin Entourage.

The Austin Entourage did not win the Cup.  However, one of its players, Tad Christie, was chosen for Team USA and will compete in the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne, Australia, in December.  In yesterday’s Austin American-Statesman we published a follow-up story and video about Tad Christie.

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog!

After being inspired by so many great photo blogs I have decided to start my own.  I am a staff photographer at the Austin American-Statesman.  I have been a newspaper photographer since 1992, and I am passionate about community photojournalism.  I hope this blog will be a place you will want to visit for ideas, inspiration and conversations about community photojournalism.

Cheers,

Jay Janner
